The KiwiRail Scenic Journeys brochure said our train ride today would be one of the world's prettiest, and I am tempted to believe it. Our trip from Picton to Christchurch had us tootling along over an incredibly varied landscape -- I can only describe it as a combination of Idaho, West Virginia, and California coast -- with sheep.
The train, the Coastal Pacific, is made for viewing and gives train travel a really good name. Notably, there was an open observation car that meant the breezes bent your brain flat as we sped through the Southern Alps and along the very blue Pacific!
