Bush Food

Our supper on Sunday night was delicious -- an introduction to bush food, the foods that grow in the natural landscape and on which traditional Aboriginal peoples depended. We ate at a small restaurant run by Rayleen Brown, a lovely and enterprising Aboriginal woman dedicated to spreading the word about bush foods. She hopes indigenous foods can become part of the Australian diet, supporting the wild harvest and the Aboriginal economy. She said simply: "Let's have a look at what's around."

Bush tomatoes (small yellow globes yummy when dried and full of Vitamin C and antioxidants, see photo); quandongs... Recipes in the cookbook included emu egg pavlova, wattle shortbread, kurrajong muffins, moth damper...
